I want low cost, high gas mileage. I may be returning my Corolla because the dealer put me in it upside down. A friend is looking into it to see if I can do anything. I'm not here to debate that issue. Just want to know what you think a low cost (not over 15000 for everything), high gas mileage (minimum of 30 in town) would be. Would love a new car, but can deal with an 05 or 06.

Also, which ones should I ABSOLUTELY stay away from, bearing in mind my deal breakers.
Also, I'm not sure I could get a good deal on a Toyota, Ford, Hundai, Kia, Volkswagon, Mitsubishi because they are all owned by the same guy locally.

You might want to consider a used Honda Civic Hybrid - my 2005 model gets an average of at least 40 mpg. The Honda Insight is a coupe and gets 700 miles to the tank, I've heard. They might be a bit over your price range, but you could get a used model.

Also, consider a Saturn. They are dependable, low maintenance cars, and I think they have a new hybrid model coming out soon.

A handy trick for finding a fair deal - join AAA. They have a list of dealerships in your area where AAA members can get a low no-haggle price on any car. AAA has already done the haggling for you, and the sales guy doesn't pressure you for more (unless you want fancy extras). I saved several thousand this way.

Try a Saturn. The newer GM engine slated for 2010 standard in all GM engines is an on-demand system, where it shuts down cylinders when not in use.

I drive a 1995 Saturn SL1 and get 41mpg in town. Unfortunately, Saturn stopped using the engine I have when they switched to making the Ion instead.

The new HOnda fit is in your price range and it gets 32mpg in the city and 38 on the highway if you get the 5 speed manual.
