Dad's the man on this one........

In the United Kingdom the common bluebell has been a protected species since 1981. This legislation was toughened up in 1989 and as such the trade in common bluebell bulbs or seeds is an offence. Landowners are prohibited from removing bluebells on their land for sale. Wild bluebells are protected by the legislation and it is a criminal offence to remove the bulbs.

My dad told me the same once.....and he s wrong too.

I am afraid all these answers saying it is illegal to pick bluebells are incorrect. It is perfectly legal to pick wild bluebells provided that they are not uprooted (only pick the flowers) and so long as they are not being picked for selling. If they are for your own enjoyment, then it is ok to pick them.
There are two species (Bluebell in Britain and Primrose in Northern Ireland) which are listed for protection only against sale.
Both the Wildlife and Countryside Act and the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) order contain a list (Schedule 8) of endangered plants, which are protected against intentional picking, uprooting and destruction (unless a licence is obtained from the relevant authority,or the damage is a result of a lawful activity and could not reasonably have been avoided). These plants are also protected against sale.
Refer to Section 8 (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1981/69/schedule/8) for the list of flowers and you will see that he Bluebell is listed but onlyin respect of section 13(2) - See link to Section 13 and refer to subsection 2 at http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1981/69/section/13 which states "sells, offers or exposes for sale, or has in his possession or transports for the purpose of sale, any live or dead wild plant included in Schedule 8, or any part of, or anything derived from, such a plant;"

Pick your Bluebells with a clear concience and enjoy them !

I hope this has cleared it up for you.

You're not supposed to pick any wild flowers these days, but if you do have to have some, snip them on the stem, don't pull up the roots.
