Synthetic.
No one can make a convincing argument for choosing one brand over another. So, just get the cheapest synthetic from a major company you can.
I actually have found that the BMW oil is the cheapest for me (it's Castrol, but branded as OEM BMW oil).
If you wanna get fancy, try and find a Level IV synthetic. Most have gone to Level III though, which some argue isn't a true synthetic. The car is 7 years old though. I really wouldn't stress that much about it. Just get whatever synthetic, even if it's Level III. Mobile 1, Red Line, Castrol, whatever.

depending on the climate you live in and the type of driving you do dictates the type of oil you should use. 10w 40 is an oil that when cold, acts as a 10 weight oil but when its warmed up it protects like a 40 weight oil. in cold climates 10 weight is too thick on start up so many use 5w 30. also in most bmw owners manuals there is a chart that uses temperature ranges to allow you to choose the best oil for your scenario.
