Try real Acetone (found in most nail polish removers) or Tolune.

One trick that worlk very well is to draw over the permanent marker using a normal whiteboard marker. The permanent marker will wipe off with the whiteboard marker.

Acetone may mar the finish on the board. So test any solvent in a corner to be sure it doesn't soften or craze the surface. I write with permanent Sharpies on videotape cassettes and usually can wipe clean with ordinary rubbing alcohol, which will not mar plastics.

I've heard that you could use nail polish remover, bleach, or even smoke ash, just see what works best for you. Personally, I think that the nail polish remover works the best.
