Does anyone know what this might be? Every time I drive my car I hear this weird whisteling/scraping sound...its only when my car is moving...when I'm in idle, or parked and in idle, it doesn't make the sound...it sounds like its coming from the rear of my car..could it be a wheel? HELP!

My brother told me that it sounds like the rear brakes. He is a mechanic and he says that is what it sounds like.

the exhaust dragging (above) is a good possibility. Not knowing the car you are driving limits the options a bit. Consider the following

1) Brakes: If you have drum brakes, your pads are worn down to where they are scraping on the drums
If you have disks, the pads are worn.

2) Bearings: Check the wheel bearings

BOTH of these can be easily checked by jacking up the car and spinning the wheels one at a time

3) Axle or center section (worn gears, bearings, etc..)

4) U joint... (fix that quickly or you will find yourself stranded somewhere soon.

5) Tires: Is something stuck in the tire... is the tire worn to the steel ribbing.

6) Hubcaps (dumb but possible): A lug nut or debris is off and trapped in the hubcap.

ok ... go look and let us know...............

It sounds like a brake shoe or pad dragging. Jack the car up and rotate the wheels one at a time to see if you can pick up the scraping noise. Inspect the shoes or pads for wear and replace if needed. This is especially prevalent on rear shoe brakes. They are probably just dragging enough to make a noise and are not harming anything. Look at the drum or rotor surface to see if it is glazed over (shiny). Take some 100 grit wet/dry sanding sheet and rough up the surface to get rid of the glaze. I hope this helps you locate the problem.

Sounds to me like you either have a break sticking or a wheel bearing that is on it's way out ..either way you should not drive the car till you get it looked at ..you may end up hurting yourself or someone else if you loose a wheel going at a high speeds. And you should take in mind the usual thing in these situations if the sound seems to come from the left the problem is usually on the right..i can't explain it ..it's usually just the way it goes and visa versa with the right and left..either way get it looked at ASAP

i own a repair shop, and if its coming from the rear of it its possible its the brakes going metal to metal on it,the will make slight squeaking noise and a grinding noise at the same time,if i was you id take it and have them looked at,it would be a lot better than having them go out,and also while they got it up in the air, they can look and see if there is anything else that might cause this also, good luck,i hope this help,s.

Look under your car. You might be able to see something caught in the undercarriage. Your brakes could be worn out causing a metal to metal scraping sound ---that will wear out your break disk/drum. It could be a wheel bearing.

Stop singing when you drive....

Sounds like it might be something under your car that got hung up and won't let go. Like the little ol' lady you hit last week.....

I'm sorry a slow day today...

I would look around the axles and the wheels maybe plastic or something like that.

Oh ya and the squealing is most likely brakes. I would have them checked

Cold brake pads rubbing the rotors/drums make a similar sound till heated up-nothing to worry about.

Hi You probably do not want to crawl around under the car looking for the problem.I would go to the local service station where you get your gas and if they have a hoist ask them to raise the car and see what is happening under there.they may charge you a couple of dollars, probably nothing because you are a steady customer.Good Luck

Probably a brake or a wheel bearing if there isn't something being dragged under your car.
