If you are trying to update rosters on your PS3 for a PS2 game you will need a network adap. to get online with ps2 games i was upset when i found out i couldn't get online with my ps3 for ps2 games o well

It would definitely depend on which game you are attempting to update. College games will not update the rosters simply by accessing the online service associated with the game. This has to do with the laws surrounding amateur player’s names being associated with merchandise.
EA could also only be updating the games that are still playable through their EA Sports Nation login.
