does anyone know of a website that might have this information or how I might research companies doing business online before I do business with them.

thanks! all your answers are great...and I've researched a few of those avenues already...just not finding the company (in question) ANYWHERE..on any sites..which is why I'm raising the red flag..thanks again to all who responded

I usually do a google search and scroll down to see if there are any reports on it. They will show up all over the place if there are issues with a site.
