Herpetologist

Education

In virtually all cases, a science degree with a major in biology is required.

Courses in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, calculus, physics and earth science are all useful. Statistics is now a necessary tool in biological studies.

A great deal of herpetological research is conducted in other countries and knowledge in one or more foreign languages is also advisable. In today's technologically advanced society, computer literacy is indispensable.

It is likely that you would also have to undergo several years of advanced study in the field. If your interest lies in the hallowed halls of academia, prepare to get your PhD in herpetology. Most jobs require at least a master's degree.

Students who get a master's degree or PhD usually have greater freedom to pursue their own interests, higher salaries and more responsibilities.
