JUST BECAUSE.....
They are not the biological parents, doesn't mean they don't WANT to be the child's parents - some care about the kid whether they are the real parent or not. Some don't care at all about the kid, just the other parent. And some think they really are the parent, because the other parent lied to them about it being their child.
It can be confusing at times - I myself happen to know a couple, who have two children. The oldest, the boy, is a child that is not the husband's. His wife had an affair, and it shows - the boy looks nothing like her husband. And now they have another baby, and this time it's a girl, who looks nothing like either of them. As it happens, two years ago the mother had a fling with another guy (number 2) but claims that nothing ever happened. Yet after Guy 2 was released from jail (September of that year) she gives birth to a baby girl in June of the following year (after 9 months?) - just a little too convenient for my taste. And yet she still claims that the girl belongs to her husband, who is a professed sterile male.

Very few mothers lie about it.. most fathers are clueless... really.

either the mother isn't sure who it is or they are after money which is what i'm thinking right now. they can still slip through the legal system or else they wouldn't do it
