i just drove my truck around the corner and it seemed to be working fine. it only pings when i accelerate in the 2nd or 3rd gear. do i need a tune up? do i need to flush my transmittion?

More than likely you need better gas in your truck. The tranny has nothing to do with pinging.

When you ask a question like this, you need to give as much info regarding the vehicle as you can. Assuming it is gas/ automatic/many miles on it...
First things first. check Oil, water, etc... all should be within normal limits. and changed at proper intervals
Pinging can be initial timing off or bad gas. get a tankful of fresh gas in it and run it around for a while to get the cobwebs out of it.
A vehicle that is not driven often will oftimes load up, gum up, and other "ups". change the plugs/wires/cap/rotor, get the timing set, run some carb cleaner thru the system, etc.
anything beyond all that and you will probably have to have someone with the proper testing equipment make the adjustments for you.

i agree with rex , try a higher octane gas
