For beginners, pretty well anything with a leather sole and preferably a leather heel will do. Rubber soles will increase both your discomfort and your risk of injury. It's also a commonly seen error for ladies to show up with sandals that have no back, and they spend the night trying not to dance out of them.

If you're a beginner, you don't need special shoes. Wear something comfortable and enjoy yourself.

Men- just wear comfortable shoes, though not sneakers because they can be too gummy-soled to turn in.
Ladies: closed-toe heels or low-heeled flats

Comfortable clean shoes that are not flip-flops. You don't want to be losing your shoes as you dance.
