Hi,
I have to travel to South Lake Tahoe and it's
snowing heavily there right now.
Its noon right now and I leave around 5pm from the
bay area. Considering the roads can be closed
for snow,
which is a better/safer road? -highway50 or I-80 ?

safer route which is less likely to close is 80...shortest route is 50, but in bad weather closes more often than not. i.e. it is presently 8:20pm and 50 is closed from Kyburz to Meyers. 80 is open at the moment.

chains are required.

if you plan to leave at 5p,you would be better off leaving 5a in the morning, as you will hit extra traffic, being it is friday and you will be smack in the middle of primetime traffic.. hwy 80 is much safer, but long to south shore,as you will have to venture around the lake at nite, watch out for snow and ice, hope you have chains and if you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, still be careful on icy roads, still can slide,too...Hwy 80 is the main hwy for major business, that truck thru there and majority of the time the road is clear ,, it would not be closed for snow, unless the caltrans drivers get overwhelm with too much in so short of time and/or avalanche..

I think I-80 is the better freeway.
