they can be attracted to bird food ( the mice eat grains, and rats eat, whatever)
Birdboxes need to be hung at least 2 metres off the ground to make them safe from predators ( rats/cats/squirrels)
If you follow guidelines about box placement , and only put out special bird feeders designed to feed only the birds you will reduce chances of attracting vermin.

field mice do sometimes get in bird boxes, mount them on a steel post or hang them from wire, not facing into the bad weather,,,mice need a home also,so make a bunch of them, nothing fancy ,,,,,BUT,,,you do need to make sure of hole size and height from floor, also whether a perch is needed,do not make them air tight,,need a sloppy fit so heat can get out along roof bottom edge, plus drain holes in bottom.good winter project to use up woo pieces ,better not to paint, very selcom do i get mice..

No, they are designed so that mice and rats are unlikely to use it. The only other creatures that may use it would be squirrels, but you can get squirrel-proof boxes to avoid this problem.

One of ours attracted a wasps' nest so be warned!!! They may attract mice, but does it matter? As long as it's not somewhere where they are likely to be able to get into the house.

It wont "attract" them unless you put food in it. If you leave it lower to the gorund they may think of it as a home but as long as you keep it high up, you should find that birds will use it more often.
