just right click on the icon and click delete. It will not delet the program , just the icon. All the desktop icon is for is a short cut TO the program.

On my computer, if I right click on the space on the desktop, I get a menu including 'Arrange icons by>', then 'run desktop cleanup wizard'. I haven't used it though, as I usually just delete them when I know I don't need them anymore.

if it is a shortcut then delete it or move it to a folder (make one). Or right click on your wallpaper and go to arrange icons by and at the bottom should be a wizard thing.

The most simple thing to do is: delete them. Select one you don't need end hit the "del" button. Answer the upcoming dialog with "Yes". That's it :-)
