(-3/8) - 1/4

you need a common denominator for the 4 so you multiply it by and you do the same to the top, resulting in:

(-3/8) - 2/8

from there you can just do regular math. -3 -2 = -5

so your answer is -5/8

You have to find common denominators for the two numbers when adding or subtracting fractions: in this case, it is 8 because you can mulitply 1/4 by 2 to get and 8 on the bottom. So you have -3/8 - 1/4 - with the common denominator, the 1/4 becomes 2/8. Then you simply subtract across: -3/8 - 2/8. -3 - 2 = -5 - this is your numerator (top number). 8 is the common denominator, which stays on the bottom, so your answer is -5/8. Does that make sense? It's been awhile since I've done math like that!!
