Christianity has had a profound effect on history from its inception. The very idea of a "son of God" rocked the early Jewish power structure. Ancient religions have felt the wrath of the Church as they were exterminated one by one. Philisohphical ideals have been shaped, either through the acceptance or rebellion against, Church teachings. The Nazis consciously rejected Christian ideals as they tried to build a new national religion based on ancient (and false) Teutonic principles. Governments are still struggling with the idea of separation of Church and state. I think this question would be more effective if it was narrowed to a specific timeframe in order to analyze more time-specific events.

Mostly wars and persecution of non-believers. At one time the Church operated charity hospitals and "poor houses" , but recently these have been changed into businesses in most Capitalist countries.
At one time, people would be put to death for the slightest offence, so the Catholic Church started a system where offenders would be jailed as a form of penance: hence Penitentiaries. Hope this helps you a bit.
