am on a compettitive swim team. While swimming Freestyle and butterfly , I havent been able to move my arms fast, just this one slow steady pace. Also my arms will hurt when they are bieng liffted out of the water, and they also feel really heavy. Some days it is worse than others. May time added 7 seconds in 1 month. The pain is up the side of my arm to my shoulder. The same thing sometimes happens to my legs on kicking sets, but not as often/ severely.
Is this normal? What can I do about it? What is happening?

It sounds like you have a muscle imbalance somewhere, kind of like cramps except it's not a general pain, just a heaviness when your arms are being lifted out of the water.

I'd say start drinking some Gatorade. This may help a bit along with eating a banana at least once every 3 days. It sounds like it may be Potassium-related but it would also be a sign as to what may be causing your troubles. Drink an average of a Gatorade a day (but no more than 3 in one day) and 2 bananas a week. If you don't have a banana around then a glass of orange juice should work. But for your own sake DO NOT eat/drink all of these together. The pH levels in your stomach will skyrocket if you do causing searing pain and possible hospitalization. If you incorporate these foods/drinks into your diet you may be able to get rid of this problem on your own.

The pain and heaviness could also be a result of over-stretching. If you do stretch you may want to cut back on your stretching since it may be sapping the energy from your muscles. It could also be forcing your muscles to exceed their normal flexibility range and make the muscles come into some various scenarios.

But all in all I'd say you need to see a doctor any way your situation goes. Tell them everything that's happened and don't leave anything out that might lead to this pain and heaviness going away. Tell them when you first started experiencing this pain, where it was, the approximate water temperature of the pool water if you remember or if you were even in the pool when the pain first started. Also tell them of any changes that you went through in your diet if any in the days leading up to this pain. Of course it's nearly impossible for someone to precisely remember all of these details but they'll all help if you can remember them and relay them to a professionally trained doctor.

My sister had something similar happen and she had a torn rotator cuff. Talk to a doctor right away. She waited too long and had to have surgery. Even if it is not a serious problem, you might be able to have physical therapy, which will help.

I'd see a sports doctor. It sounds like you have muscle problems. Perhaps it is just a result of a poor or unfitting diet, but it could be a serious problem. I'd get it checked out.
