Both of these ideologies are concerened with the concept of EQUITY (note, I don't mean fairness or equality) .....in an ages where most wealth and power was concentrated in the hands of a few, the notion that it SHOULD be SHARED created for a volatile environment. eg rise of nationalism in early 1900's Russia gave momentum to the Bolshevik Revolution. Similarly, the French Revolution was based on the creed of equality, liberty and egalitrianism.

One example I can think of is in France during Napolean I, with France being one, if not the only "super power" controling much of europe. Many countries supported France rather than go to war with them. The "liberal" views of Napolean and the French government, i.e. the end of monarchy and noblity, and a system that was based on royal families in control, some of the nobility of these countries, like Austria and Prussia, supported a strong feeling of nationalism to get their people to support them aganist Napolean and his liberal ideas that threatend their power.
I am not sure if this makes sense or if it can help you out but I thought i would give it a try.
