I am trying to help someone with their mac. He bought a new printer and it will not work with the old mac he has. I believe it is a version 9. something. I am not familiar with macs at all. When trying to install the printer it says that it will only work with mac os 10 or higher. Is there anyway around this?

probably not. you should try looking on the website of the printer manufacturer to see if they make a driver for OS 9. The other option is upgrading to OS X. He can still run OS 9 'Classic' if there are specific OS 9 programs he likes. There have been 4 versions of OS X, so they really don't make any new hardware or software that runs in OS 9.

Hello kim1032002,

This might be a good time for him to upgrade his Macintosh. The technology has really improved quite a bit since he bought that old beige Macintosh of his. As you can see, his old Mac worked a good long time for him, trouble-free, but now might be the time to join the 21st century.

Actually, I'm kind of surprised that he could even attach a new printer to an older Mac. Mac OS X is fantastic! He'll love it.

If he wants to hold onto his old Mac then perhaps he should consider returning his new printer, and buying an old, used printer that will work with his older hardware.

Best of luck to you both.

Upgrade the mac. There is probably no driver for os 9. If the person you were trying to help keeps the os 9 mac, he will run into problems installing any new hardware on it. Just get a new mac.

If he is using Mac OS 9, you can go to the printer manufactures website and see if they have a driver for the printer for OS9.

If not there is not a work around I am familiar with. :-(

Whatever you do, the printer is probably good...I'm guessing 99% of your problem is in the Mac itself. Throw it away and get a real computer.
