Radon exists naturally in rock. It could be in the rocks of the foundation, or in rock underneath the foundation. Radon is radioactive, which means it emits radioactive particles that can intefere with your DNA and wreck reproduction of the cells, leading to cancer.
It's a good idea to see if there are high levels of radioactive radon in the house, especially the cellar, 'cause you could be subject to radioactivity and disease or death. It's costly to fix too, and rather difficult to resell the house.

Radon is a natural colorless, odorless gas common in specific geographic areas. It is a known carcinogen.
It's certainly not required to have testing done prior to a sale everywhere, but in some areas it might be.
Radon test kits cost about $10.

radon is formed when radium decays it is a very heavy noble gas and is itself radioactive. Presumably they do checks because it is radioactive and thus not good for you in high doses

I'll answer your question by posing a question to you.
Would you buy a house that contained a hazardous gas that causes lung cancer?
