I just rented "The Departed" and turned it off because they used the "F" word in almost every line. I thought this was disgusting and uncalled for. It took away from the storyline. Why does Hollywood think such filth is "artisic"? Anyone can swear! That takes no effort! And now this film is up for an academy award? Give me a break! Do you agree with me? What do you think?

Sometimes cussing may fit a certain scene or line but have we gotten to the point where our society cusses constantly? I don't think so! And I wish Hollywood would tone it down!

Cussing in a movie is a lazy way to set a mood. If you think of the greatest movies of all time, very few have much cussing. When writers get lazy, they lose the test of time. It is quite a shame that cussing qualifies as a major part of a screenplay. The same is true of car chases and fights, none of it adds to a movie. It is all just time filler that lazy writers fall back on.

Well obviously if its a mob or gangster type movie then its going to have the f word in it all over the place. Otherwise who's going to buy into the character? If a tough guy yells out forget you instead of f--- you, I'm gonna laugh and dismiss his character as unrealistic. Its like when network tv shows a movie that has lots of cuss words, but replaces the cuss words with less offensive words thus ruining the credibility of the movie and making it into an unintentional comedy. Go rent a disney movie and stfu.

Nice to hear you say that. You should watch old black and white films. You never hear any swear words in those. Matter of fact, that's why you don't even see them as reruns. So the junk distributors won't have any competition. In retrospect they're a little better, back then we thought them great - to - so - so. The visceral novelty of the sixties has worn off by about thirtyty years. Hollywood. Ever a few years behind the times!

I don't think the foul language is near as bad as what some movies have today in the way of gore and stuff. Anyone who saw Hills have eyes I hope knows what I'm talking about. That movie was disgusting.

anyone says it makes a movie more realistic is a moron, that is only in the case of a war movie when you life hangs in the balance, and The Departed was over the top with bad language, and Smokin Aces was by far the pointless amount of f-bombs

I know it makes the characters more realistic.. you can't have like, gangster/mob movies with some guy yelling "Gee golly, don't shoot me sir!" And if there were no foul language from a person in a movie that you would expect to be using it, it's not believable. They want to make it as believable as possible...

There are lots of people in real life who talk like that (not me) and it is tiresome.

When Goodfellas came out in 1990, I remember reading somewhere that the F bomb was used like 292 times in that movie. But it is my favorite movie ever.

I agree to an extent. I think people do swear in everyday life so it does make it more realistic to use swears but how many do they actually need? Sometimes it just goes overboard.

the Departed was an awsome movie I can't believe you turned it off....plus I think that the cursing in that movie was called for as the characters were mobsters....usually people who don't mind killing others don't mind cursing....However I have seen movies where it was unnecessary and I do not like that too much but I probably wouldn't turn it off just for that..
