I think it has everything to do with the money. When someone makes $25.2 million dollars a year people except him to hit .400 knock in 200 RBI's and smash 80 home runs. All that plus win a gold glove and lead his team to a world championship every single season.
Of course we both know that in the real world that just ain't gonna happen! As a player I for one would love to have the number he produces in one of his so-called "off" seasons. He's a great player. There is not doubt about it. True baseball fans like you and me understand that fact.

The big contract had a lot to do with how people feel about Alex. He and his agent played the Texas rangers into an ungodly amount 252 million for 10 years were at the time the normal was around 7 million per year. People resented this arrogance that they perceived he had. Plus the comments he made about his "friend" Derek Jeter in 2001 weren't very nice either and that has come back to haunt him in his relationship with the captain.

only an idiot could put down derek jeter./... and no he is not being selfish not letting alex play short.. he just goes where the manager tells him to go..and at this time alex is just a little too big to play the position. remember he isnt the skinny kid he was 10 years ago with the mariners.. also if you are struggling to play third base , you will struggle even more at shortstop..next.. say what you want about alex but he will have 500 hrs by the time he is 31. no man on this planet ever can say that.. ever..but when you get the fat contract then nothing is ever enough.. his stats last year would of been career years for almost anybody but since its alex, its never enough until you win it all and you play well while winning it all...it just goes with the territory and alex understands this...i think he is handling this all very well under the intense scrutiny that he has received....i know he will get there and its gonna be beautiful and when he does the critics will just say '' well he only won one'' and he didnt play so well in the other ones neither so we want to see more...

I've never even thought he was that overpaid. He has consistent numbers and helps anytime he's on. His biggest problem is not coming through in the clutch, the playoffs and such.
He also says some really dumb things to the Media sometimes, who are always going to blow things out of proportion.
There are some players who have great years every once in awhile, but A-Rod has a great year every year and is going to be a Hall-Of-Famer hands down. But until he has that validation of champion, he's never going to get the respect he deserves.
It's a damn shame, too, because so far as well all know, he's done what he's done clean.

i agree to disagree with everyone in here. THERE all overpaid whats it matter if its 10 mill or 50mill, do u think david beckham is worth 50mill a year for playing 32 games of soccer. Jeter makes 20mill and avgs whats 100 runs 20SB 70rbis and like 15hrs and is good in the clutch. arod has 8 straight years of 100 runs and 100 rbis not to mention everytime he hits a homerun hes the youngest to do it. doesnt that mean something. Last year he was worth more than 25million with all the tickets he sold and yes thats a true statistic so dont say its not. Michael Vick makes like 14mill for playing 16 games of football and hes terrible. he doesnt win games all he does is run, he has had only like 1 3000 yard passing season is 6 seasons. criticize him, didnt he just flick a fan off. so in the end there all overpaid when are people gonna realize that wouldnt you except 25mill if it was offered to you? plus he gave 3.9mill to charity

if he wasn't getting paid 25 milliion dollars he would still be critized but not as much as he does know. When a man gets paid 25 million dollars and can't get the job done in the playoffs it's a disgrace. He's also playing in new york where the pressure is tremendous!!!! it's been odvious that there are players that just can't handle new york.

The guy is an arrogant, insecure, cry-baby who thinks he's the center of the universe... Made a big deal about wich team he'll play with at the WBC, made a big deal about how early he wake up in the morning, Ask to be named rangers captain and then go to the yankees, sign big contract with texas an then want out, said Jeter didn't deserve a contract like his because Jeter don't carry his team like he does his lousy teammates in Seattle for many years (what about Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson and Griffey)

I think that people criticize him because he is getting paid the highest contract in baseball, and he hasn't done well in the playoffs. Nobody is worth what he is getting paid. I am not a die hard Alex Rodriguez fan, but I am a Yankee fan, and I will continue to support any Yankee player as long as they are Yankees.

There are a number of reasons.
*He's got the biggest contract in the history of baseball.
*He's good looking and people are envious of that.
*Things that he says suggest that he's too worried about his stats and not enough about winning.
*In his last two playoff appearances he is 3-for-29 (.103 AVG) with 0 homeruns and 0 RBIs in 9 games.
*He plays in New York which is undoubtedly the biggest stage in sports so everything he says and does is under a microscope.

i think part of it has to do with his salary, but i think there are two other factors which are more important
1. he has done nothing in the playoffs...consistently he fails in the playoffs...no matter how many good regular seasons you have, when you play for a team like the yankees that is ho hum business, you need to produce come playoff time, and a-rod hasn't
2. he plays in new york...the media gets on him for every little thing, and everyone in that city uses derek jeter as the measure of greatness which is somewhat unfair to everyone else because jeter is the most beloved yankee possibly of all time
