I think the idea is disgusting. It takes a miracle and turns it into a fashion accessory.

I am not in favour of designer babies although I can understand a parents need to try grasping at the last straw to save a child that they already have ( ie having a designer baby specifically to save a sibling) But overall I think it is the thin edge of the wedge and that people with enough money will end up getting exactly what they want and Hitlers dream of a super race could actually come true. What a horrific thought that would be.
To choose a baby by its intellect, eye colour or sex is insane. It would imbalance the world even more than it is today.
At the end of the day there are so many children in the world that need a good home that IVF is really just a way of getting what you want without any consideration for the child. It is about fulfilling a need to procreate and have a genetic link to further our family. It is not about a child or any child would do. I really believe that before another life is brought into this world through intervention that we should think about the ones that are already here.

All you will have is a baby. The child will still have to go through life and make the same mistakes and choices as every other child.
You can't guarantee the end product, the adult who will grow from that baby.
No matter how you manipulate the genes, we are all the sum of our experiences.

no, i just did a report on this too, and i think that it can cause gender discrimination, if one gender is prefered over the other. but either way its wrong. i also recently watched GATTACA in biology, designer babies can lead to that type of sitch were the vincents are not good enough, you have to be a jerome or you'll never get anywhere

Is it ethically right for parents to leave it all to chance, possibly ending up with physically and/or mentally challenged offspring?

well it really wouldnt be that much different than the mate selection process that has been used by mankind since creation. We chose our mate because we want the strongest children, whether you agree or not we are all subconsciously doing it.

i rather have Gods created baby than designed one.
but one thing i would use this for is to exclude genetical illnesses from my baby if there would be something in particular running in my family.
