Yes you're right, it's damn stupid. There are very few shades designed to take energy saving lamps.
Look around the light shops and you can see lots of wonderful designs for high energy bulbs but nothing except the good old paper ball to hide these ugly lights without losing out on the efficiency. The lamps are too big for globe type fittings.
Designers just haven't taken this on board.

Because they are fluorescent bulbs. They work off of 5 Watts instead of 100 Watts. It is a power savings with the same amount of light.

The ones I've seen are shaped like a corkscrew but take up the same space as a regular bulb. I'm switching!

Ive got them everywhere i bought the paper lampshades from the asda there £1.50 each and will cover the bulbs easily

I use long life light bulbs and my lampshades fit just fine. Go to either dunelm or wilkinsons and you will find a nice selection there.

Please try this website - timesonline.co.uk/homedirect - you should find long-live low power light bulbs which are the same shape as ordinary bulbs - bayonet fitting etc.
