I always think... if you see someone without a smile give them one of yours! Sometimes it works and they smile back, other times yes it looks like they have indigestion BUT I work in a pharmacy so usually that is their problem!

Keep smiling, I do!

There are many different factors that can play a role in earning a returned smile. Providing that you are wearing clothes at the time, hygiene is not a problem, and you're not accompanying the smile with demonic looking eyes while wielding a weapon, I would veer towards a more cultural explanation. In certain cultures, it is considered impolite to smile at a stranger or even make eye contact for that matter. Others perhaps were raised in a more introverted environment and do not feel at ease to smile unless they know the individual well. Whatever the reason, I wouldn't take it personally, unless the person was my dentist.

Some people simply don't smile, the same way some people are not comfortable giving hugs, shaking hands, or other forms of greetings.
Some people have something going on inside. During my first marriage, husband beat me regularly. Rather than asking me why I looked sad, people were often inclined to chastise me for not smiling.
Some people have physical reasons why they don't smile. I once knew a lady who was born without the facial muscles that would allow her to smile. It felt strange to talk to her because her face did not reflect her emotions, but I knew better than to think she was snubbing me.
Then there's some more short-term physical reasons for no smiles, such as recent dental work.

Before you judge a person for not returning your smile, keep in mind that for some people, returning smiles does not come as easily like it does for you.

Maybe they do.
Or they are not looking at you, they are thinkins something else..
But I wiill think they have not courtesy since is the first time you are meeting them.
I dont smile often cause I have personal problems is nothing to do with other people, i hope they don't think the same.
But if I just meet I will smile even if I feel tired or depress
Any ways thats one way to meet people how they really are.

My 4 year old has a great (however, sometimes embarrassing) solution to this. We, too, smile at everyone. When she stumbles across one of these "unsmilers" she asks.

"I just smiled at you...why did't you smile?"

The responses are priceless. We've heard the good ole, "oh, sorry honey", to flat out ignored.

We've, my 4 year old and I, have decided that some people are just weird.

Hi again. I thought this to myself today. I have a friend at school ( we are mums not kids) and when I walk over I smile and she never does. We go to weight watchers together its not like she doesnt like me, she texts and rings etc. But she wont smile. Mind you she always has some health problem to share so she prob is working up to telling me. I think it lacks social graces to not smile back.

Hey Ashish, I know exactly what you mean. Don't bother wasting your energy or your smile for that matter on people like that. I also hate when I say hello and people look at me like I have two heads! What is wrong with them?? Were just trying to be nice. :)

I always smile back. A lot of people are just unhappy and rude. They dont see that you're just trying to pass some happiness around.

Some people are insecure with themselves...and some are just jerks! Consider yourself lucky...wouldn't you hate being one of those people being grouchy all the time. It must be miserable being that ornery and crabby! Or...maybe they do have indigestion! LOL
