Don't leave him to cry it out, because all that will teach him is that when he is frightened and alone at night, no-one will come to help calm him down...

Make sure your baby is sleepy, full, and clean. Put baby to bed with a brief bedtime routine. Leave the room. Close the door. DON'T GO BACK TILL MORNING even if the baby cries. For a long time. It will be a few nights, a week at the most before your baby adjusts to not getting attention in the middle of the night and gives it up and sleeps through the night.

Just let them cry and they will fall back asleep. It may take a couple of times so be strong.
