I have a Black Chinese Reeves turtle in a 30 gal tank. I use a Fluval filter with sponge and ceramic cylinders inside. The manual says to clean it every 6 months.
Last time I cleaned it and filled the tank up within 4 hours the water became increasingly green with algae. The time I previously cleaned the filter I didn't have this problem. Usually I change the water in the tank and clean the rocks and algae out every two weeks. Lately this has also made the water cloudy with algae. After a 4 or 5 days it's clear again. Any ideas about what might be happening?

1. Which size filter system are you using? For a 30 gallon turtle tank, you should be using a filter rated for about 90-100 gallons.

2. This sounds like the biological filtration section is trying to grow a new colony. While the biological colony is growing, the water will become cloudy. It can take up to 2 weeks for the colony to fully form. in the meantime, you should do partial water changes every few days to give the filter a chance to get working right.

3. You can learn more about turtle tank water management in the 'Water Quaity' section of http://www.austisnturtlepage.com
