Should Chief Illiniwek been forced into retirement? I mean we live in a free country. It just seems that we are becoming a nation of "don't offend". Funny, we can allow the burning of the flag and allow California HIGHSCHOOL students to fly the Mexican flag over an upside down American flag, but we can't let a college keep a mascot who's offensiveness is trivial at best.

I saw the last dance last night and felt sorry that some stupid people got their way in retiring the Illiniwek. I never thought that it was insulting to the red Indians. Insulting was to take away their land and rape their wives and daughters and force them into the gambling business but in a sporting event an inspiring and entertaining dance was not causing any insult to any redindians. Stupid ***** should stop making everything so political.

The NCAA appears to be banning all "offensive" mascots, although a few have been able to avoid the ban by showing support from the tribe in question. The Illini so far have mostly spoken out against "the Chief".

The problem I have is the blind loyalty that the undergraduates at the school have towards the Chief. They act as if some constitutional right has been trampled on. It's a silly little halftime show that amuses the crowd at a school with no athletic or academic sources of pride.

Should the undergraduate community at Illinois ever mature, the Chief should be reinstated.

I couldn't have said it better myself! Especially in the light of the question being brought up at Florida State a few years back which resulted in the CHIEF of the Seminole nation releasing a statement saying that the Seminole nation was PROUD of their culture being adopted by the sports teams at FSU and that they were proud of the university in general wanting to use their name to reflect the overall culture of the area and etc. It made me wonder why so may other schools and sports teams got so pissy about it!

i can see both sides of the issue...it, i think could really affend some people and then that might spread and the universty would get smaller, and then it takes years and years for markting for all the illiniwek stuff to get as popualar as it is right now...
