How do I go about making friends? I am very shy and don't have the ability to do much, and I'm not a clubber or partier. I am a single mother in a small suburb, I work, but everybody I work with is much older than me. What can I do to get out a little more? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the answers, another thing is my son is only 8 months, so no school or park yet..just walking with the stroller.

Well i can really relate to this as my mother suffered the same trait. How bout going for walks with your kid/s if you see someone walking or playing near you why not drop in for a chat introduce yourself. The best thing my mother told me was that it doesnt matter who your friends are no matter what age,gender as long as you have some. so try joining school committees or maybe even joining your kids to clubs so that you can meet some parents to have a nice chat with.
Just remember dont be shy because you are who you are and im sure everyone would love you!!

get involved in out side activitys . I know your time is limited but you never know when you will met that special someone . little did I know that when I started doing volunter work at the local free clinic that I would meet my future wife , [ and that was over 30yrs ago , and I always tell people that we met at a VD Clinic

be friendly, Make it a priority. When you are at school, chat up another mom. It may be hard or seem awkward at first but the more you do it the easier it will be. most people are really nice.
