I wear red quite often and there is an art to it. You have to take time and practice. don't try this when you're in a hurry or getting ready to go out, practice when you have the time to do it right. Do your lips just like the rest of your make up application put some foundation on your lips, powder your lips, too.
Now line your lips, go around the edges and try to outline the lip. If you make a mistake, wipe it off with a baby wipe and re-apply some powder then try the lip pencil again. Now finish the lip by filling in the entire lip with liner. Every bit of your lip needs to be covered in liner. Now apply your lipstick. Stay away from lipsticks with names like cream, rich, or moist. They're too oily to stay on your lips or to go on evenly.
Pencils that glide on really easily or seem greasy are not what you want. Laura Mercier and Chanel make the best lip pencils, they're matte, not shiny. Chanel lipsticks are long wearing as well. There is not one gloss that goes on as a true red, I've already scoured the globe for one and it doesn't exist... yet.
I hope this helps and you have red, red lips soon!!

Before applying lipstick, especially one with a deep pigment, apply chapstick or lip balm and wait five minutes or so for it to soak in. If your lips are chapped, take a wet toothbrush and scrub to exfoliate them. Next, purchase a lip liner in a shade identical to your natural shade. This makes the look more refined and gives the edge precision. Never extend the lipliner outside of the curves of your lips, or you may become a Courtney Love wannabe. Make sure you are especially careful around the "Cupid's Bow" of the lips, and the corners of your smile. Then, apply the lipstick in layers. Most professional make up artists will tell you lipstick is much easier to apply when you use a cosmetic brush. Once you finish the first layer, take a tissue and press it between your lips. Wait a few seconds, and apply a second layer. Continue to blot and layer until you are at the desired color. You also may be using the wrong shade of red. It may be too orange or something.

First what you want to do is buy a lip concealer. This will neutralize the natural color of your lips that can automatically alter any shade you try to wear. Then you want to find a red liner that is a few shades darker. That way you lips arent so RED and BAM in your face. But when you line your lips you want to line it with the side of the lip pencil NOT the tip. And dont apply to your actual lip line. Color the inside of your lips inside your lip line. Because once your shade starts to fade your lips wont be just lined with red pencil. Once you've done that dont apply lip color directly out of the tube. Scrap a little off with the side of a q-tip and apply with a lip brush. After applying your color pick put a gloss. If red, then you want something very subtle. Layering your colors like this help for it to last longer. Good luck.

It may be the type of product you're using. I love MAC cosmetics and they have a Russian Red lip glass that's perfect...I've gotten plenty of compliments on the color. I use a lip liner (Nightmoth) to match with the lip glass. Apply the lip liner first and put the lip glass in the middle of your lips and smooch your lips together. That technique will help you not smudge your gloss on the outer line of your mouth. With any make-up application it'll take time and practice. If your lips are real chap then you may want to use a lip primer before applying your lipstick.

I personally feel that red is to dramatic for daytime. BUT if you are comfortable wearing it ( remember to keep the eyes neutral ) Then go for it ! I feel that a true red ( equal parts of blue and red ) lipstick is very flattering along with any red that had an orange or brown tinge. The best way to see what suits you is go to your local department store and try them on. Go with minimal makeup and neutral eye.. this will help you pick the best color Hope this helps !

You need to make sure your lips are smooth, first Try brushing them gently with your toothbrush, then apply a thin layer of lip balm before applying the lipstick. Use a good brand, too. The cheap stuff doesn't go on as smoothly and the colors aren't as good.

Put a thin layer of foundation, allow few seconds to dry, apply thin layer of lipstick (use lip pencil previously, but do not overdo it, just accent the natural lip line), apply a spot of lip gloss on mid lips (or only at the middle of the lower lip) to add volume.

I use the Maybelline stay put lipstick, a bit more expensive but it does just that.
Outline the lips with a slightly darker liner, then you can fill in the rest and wait for it to dry, cover with the lipgloss that comes with it and voila! no smudge, stayput lippy.
