Why is it so popular?
I never did get what was so appealing about 22 guys kicking a ball around trying to get it into each others net.
Why is 12 guys hitting a ball with a stick trying to get it into each others net not so popular, or 10 guys bouncing a ball around trying to get it into each others net?
I'm not on about the speed skill or agility of the sports which all require a high level of talent. But why has football become the dominant sport as opposed to rugby, hockey, etc
What psychologically attracts people to football in the first place?

Football is probably the only game that can be played with no special equipment and as few as one player. It can be reduced to the level of 1 or 2 kids kicking a tin round, as you do not even need a ball to play.
To illustrate this point at my grandson's school balls have been banned during break time (for health and safety, but that's another discussion) and what do they do? They kick a stone around and try to get it between two coats on the floor.
The majority of other sports need some sort of special equipment, playing area and so on. Football doesn't need these things for it to develop in a kids mind as a running around past-time. It is easy to see how, as they develop, for many and indeed the majority, it is the favoured sport.
It is a simple thing for kids to grasp during their formative years and appears to stay with them and develop into the more structured form we see on pitches all over the world.
I have always preferred cricket, but I can see how football is more popular.
I hope this gives you a different slant to think about. Best wishes.
