The ancient Greeks certainly knew it was round. They even had figured out the diameter of the Earth, as well as that of the moon and the sun, and how far away was the moon and the sun. Check out Aristarchus' work on this, in 3rd century BC, based on Eratosthenes' derivation of the diameter of the Earth in the same time period. Pythagoras was one of the first to propose that the Earth was round in 5th century BC, but he did so on philosophical grounds, and did not offer written evidence of it. It was Aristole in 4th century BC that made the first observational arguments for a spherical Earth, after being taught by his teacher, Plato, that it was.
