It's likely you'll be able to shield yourself from the effects of occasionally viewing a bad movie, especially if you exercise your critical faculties by thinking about what you've seen and the exact elements that contribute to its badness. Even so, look out. If you find all you can say is "duh" when someone asks you why or how the movie was bad, that's bad news.
Repeated exposure to a bad movie or movies, however, is another story, especially if it's voluntary. Watch that bad movie over and over, and it'll drain the IQ right out of that brain of yours. It may even drain the intelligence out of the people around you (in the cone of ignorance) whether or not they watch the movie with you. If you are forced into this type of situation (you work at a movie theatre, or .. uh ... you are being tortured) do anything you can to keep your mind active. Count things (the number of times the word "the" is used, or something). Imagine deeper and hidden meanings to the events unfolding before you -- maybe one of the actors is actually pretending to be a bad actor because he or she has a secret that undue media attention brought on by winning an academy award would be likely to reveal. Again, if you find yourself unable to think anything but "duh, that's stupid" that is a very bad sign. Run. Scream.

They don't necessarily lower your intelligence, but the time you spend watching them is time you can't ever get back.
Although I do remember a tv show/movie where the characters were talking about the space in their brain that was used up by useless information and what if they couldn't fit the cure for cancer in their brain because they had some moronic bit of info using up the space ...

They certainly don't improve it. They don't give you any food for thought - and when we do not use our brain, it ages faster. And they are a waste of time and money.
