From the earth's perspective, the earth is still experiencing growing pains, so earthquakes are great stress relievers. They release gas, heat and pressure.

From a human perspective, they remind us that some things are bigger than the human ego. They teach us how to build better and where not to build.

Obviously the biggest advantage of an earthquake is that it releases pressure built up along plate margins in relatively small proportions. If an active area doesn't have regular earthquakes you could get catastrophic failure.

1 Human existence and population control
2 release of in-earth stress (stress release)
allowing a dynamic earth crust to move, if it was nt for plate techtonics the earth would be covered by the ocean as no land would be formed or uprisen and would be eroded to a low level which would be flooded by the ocean (land surface is stable at a consistant height, thats why we have erosion and sedimentation) hence if the earthquakes which release the stress did nt occur, plate techtonics would not function and the earth would be a boring flat and waterlogged - hence we couldnt exist

Measuring seismic Activity is an Advantage as well as finding out which tec tonic plates shift in order to predict Fetcher quakes.

It helps to study about earth interior layers. Since the accumulated energies are released from time to time from tectonic plate boundaries major future earthquakes at that places are avoided.

None. Don't believe all you read. Having said that, the structure of the earths interior is revealed to us by the shock waves produced. It is a bit like being able to use a massive sonar on the earth.

It helps get rid of a lot of the old unsafe buildings. When San Francisco gets 'The Big One', and it just a matter of time, it will eventually be rebuilt into a much more beautiful place.

i guess it teaches us more about the world and therefore next time there is one, we can minimise the impact. [think of how much Krakatoa helped us develop our understanding of volcanoes - the same can be said of earthquakes].
