It's pretty cheap advertising ($1.00-$1.50 each)
The good news is (benefit) is that it is always present (top of mind awareness) whenever they use it.
Another good source is to have mouse pads with your name (It's always in from of them even more than a pen)
You can deduct the expense.
Pens get picked up by different people (unlike a mouse pad or a flyer) so there's a good chance of more than one person seeing it.

You can give them away so when people use it they think of your company. If you lose it and its a nice pen somebody is going to hold on to. If they have clients that use the pen they see it. Its another way of advertising that can actually be quite effective.

its advertisement.
I left my business pens everywhere I went, I gave them to the bank tellers, so they sent them to the customers in the drive in and always to waitresses/ waiters.
Sponsored a softball team and got baseball cap logo as well.
I closed one of the businesses over four years ago and I still run across those pens in super markets and such.

If someone walks away with one of your pens, they'll see your business labeled on them and be reminded of your business. They'll have your address, phone number which will make it easier for them to use your services again.
