My 5 week old throws up everything he eats. He projectile vomits not just a little spit up. He is fed about 80% breast milk. I feed him 2-3 oz every 1.5-2hrs or when he cries. I burp him frequently and he still throws up like crazy! Is this all normal?

The other 20% of his feedings are Enfamil gentle ease formula when I can't pump enough breast milk.

spitting up normal, but what your describing is not. Make an appointment and Talk to his pediatrician about it.

You would be amazed at how much your baby spits up. My daughter's pediatrician did a test for me. She put about and oz. of water in a cup and spilled it across the paper on the examining table. I couldn't believe how such a small amount looked so big spread out. If your baby is projectile vomiting, which is not normal, then you need to contact your pediatrician at once. Your baby could have the flu or a virus of some sort. It's better to be safe than sorry. Good luck.

Spitting up is normal, projectile is not (his body is getting no nutrients). Sounds like his body can't tolerate what your feeding him. By the way what do you mean by about 80% breast milk, what is the other 20 % (it could be the problem).
See your doctor ASAP about this before he loses weight (a day or two maximum).

Sorry your getting so many rude responses. :((

Projectile vomit is actually pretty common in boys. In fact, when my girlfriends found out I was pregnant I got the warning about it. Even my peditrican asked me about it on our first wellness visit.

I wouldn't worry about it. At this point it's usually nothing to worry about and they do manage to actually gain weight. I'm not sure how...but they do. I think it actually looks worse than it is, and there's nothing they can do about it. It's a bodily repsonse no bacteria or virus. In fact, my girlfriend's did it every now and again once we was off formula - when eating solids. Talk about a mess!!

I kept my self stocked in cloth diapers for just that reason. They are big and super absorbant. I kept one or two beside me just in case...plus, if you don't have any they are super cheap. I'd just keep a hand towel beside you at every feeding.

Could be reflux. You need to see the doctor. It's normal for a little milk to come back, but not projectile like you have described.

Get a dopctors appointment and tell him/her you suspect reflux. They should prescribe baby gaviscon or something like it.
When he sleeps, prop him up slightly so that the milk stays down. If he is lying down flat, it is easier for the milk and stomach acid to leak back up causing the vomiting rather than the posseting :)

Good luck!

This could be a upper GI problem and you should have the baby checked out. Acid reflux is normal in infants, but still needs to be monitored by the doctor to make sure the child is gaining weight and healthy. Good luck.

Next time when he cries don't feed him right away. Maybe he's needs a diaper change, a soother to suck, sleepy or just needs a hug.

my premie nephew threw up everything he ate as well. They changed formulas many times to see what was right..then finally they had to go to the dr to check his stomach. He ended up having to drink soy milk which is thinner. But either way, they had to see a dr.
