I think you cannot say gilmour is better or barrett is better, they did very important things for floyd, Barrett was a visionary and a great composer, very creative and unfortunately totally burned out and Gilmour is the maximum expression of the "feeling" with his guitars, his "long blues" notes get into your mind like knives and it doesn't hurt!!!... they are very different is like listening two different bands. I love the song BIKE from the paper at the gates of dawn by Barrett, is simply out of this world and he defenitively has influenced lots and lots of musicians such as Bowie.

Syd Barrett. He's the one that wrote most of the lyrics to their songs although he didn't get to perform all of them since he went crazy. Plus the originals are always better than replacements.

Syd, but David was easier on the eyes for much longer than Syd ;D

Syd had some great concepts, and the band wouldn't have existed without him. David had some great guitar skills, and the band probably wouldn't have gotten so far without him. However, tagging along is one thing, founding is another.
