Okay I've decided that my wife may have bi-polar disorder which means there are meds out there that can help her. I'm a little concerned because she was diagnosed with depression a little over 10 years ago and while she was on them, she attempted suicide. I do NOT want this to happen with bi polar medication. Will she have to take the meds for the rest of her life? If she ever gets off them is she going to turn into a maniac? Will it cause her to have suicidal thoughts or tendencies? Will it change her personality?

Hell I am on them for the rest of my life.. and I hate taking them but couldn't function without them!!!! It's not going to turn her into a maniac!! She just has to find the one that is right for her.. there is alot out there... get her to talk to a shrink 1st without meds and then go from there.. she may not need them just a visit to the doc every month or so... My meds make me happier and easier to get along with .. without them I am a total BIT*H!!!!And cry all the time and feel really suicidal!!! Good luck!!!!

You asked a lot in one question. There are actually multiple medications that a doctor can use to treat someone with Bi-Polar disorder. The disorder is at both ends of the scale. Many times the medications that they give for the depressive side of the bipolar can actually cause the person to have a manic episode and will usually be given another med to help that as well. Normally the meds are prescribed to get someone through an episode and then a doctor can (if they feel it is the right treatment) put them on a maintenance medication. This is different for every person and needs to be discussed with your doctor. Most of the medications that are prescribed are for long term and not just a quick fix. WebMD has a wonderful Bi-Polar page that I suggest you go read and study, it covers the meds, the disease, the treatment... Then talk to the doc and see what is right for her (your wife needs to learn all she can too, since she is the one that will be on the meds or not.
