If the situation with the illegals isnt contained soon, there could be a "civil" war.

Honestly, the USA does not have the resources, much less the will to fight a *serious* war with Iran, I don't think we ever have. Oh sure, we could drop a few bombs here and there, but we would be pretty helpless to do anything on the ground; not while we are still bogged down in Iraq and Afganistan. Any threats that the American government makes , you can pretty much chalk down to the same kind of childish saber-rattling that that the Iranian government has been doing these last few years. No-one takes these threats seriously, and neither should you. Once President Bush is out of office in 2008, hopefully the diplomatic situation will improve, at least a little bit.....

As far as the Iranian nuclear program goes, I don't see what the big deal is......The only reason Iran wants nukes is the same reason the US won't get rid of it's nukes: for the prestige, and to provide at least a partially credible deterrent. Nowadays, no sane person would use a nuke except as a weapon of desperation, not if they valued their life. That is also doubly true of giving nukes to militants, not when you've spent so much time and energy to make the things. But then again, we humans have a nasty habit of pulling out our guns and thinking they will solve all our problems.... The hypocrisy of telling another nation to dismantle it's nuclear weapons, while we still hold on to all ours, is stunning.

Hope you find that at least a little bit reassuring.

P.S: If the US doesn't put a stop to its energy importing habits, we may end up looking more and more like Iran each day....

I certainly hope not. I think few Americans are aware of Iran's problems regarding energy, since most only know that Iran is a major oil producer and exporter. A lot of it is due to stupid policy: if the Iranian government continues to subsidize energy costs, there is little incentive to the end-user to save energy. [Gasoline in Iran, for example, is about 40 cents a gallon -- the cost differential is made up by the government.]

For those who are not familiar with Iran's situation, here it is in a nutshell: Iran actually imports a lot of gasoline because it does not have the refining capacity to meet demand -- again, mostly due to subsidizing gasoline to where there is no incentive to use it wisely. Iran only produces about 4 million barrels of oil per day, down from 6 million in the 1970's. They are nearly depleted on natural gas supplies. Exports, which fund the majority of the government functions, demand 2.5 million barrels of that oil, and most of the rest is refined to gasoline. Thus there are not many other energy options for Iran at this time, especially now that many areas of its most populous cities are experiencing power shortages and blackouts due to lack of energy supplies.

I'm pretty convinced, given the facts, that Iran does not intend to build nuclear weapons with its enrichment program. Iran is getting desperate to find a non-petroleum source for power for its cities. In fact, it's pretty obvious at this point that Iran does not have the capability to highly enrich enough uranium to build a gun-style nuclear weapon (the same kind that leveled Hiroshima). However, I think it would have been better for the government to come clean from the start regarding its enrichment program. Furthermore, I think Iran would be wiser to put more work into solar energy, especially new technologies like Stirling engine dishes, which are twice as efficient as solar cells, and far cheaper.

That being said, I wish I knew what our government in America was thinking. Bush seems to be beyond any sort of reason at this point, and his agenda remains hidden. The recent trouncing at the ballot box seems to not have had any effect on him or his resolve to ignore what his people want. There are now three aircraft carrier groups within striking distance of Iran, and needless to say, many of us politically active Americans aren't buying the Administration's reassurances that they don't intend to strike Iran.

You can pretty much rest assured that the American people don't want a confrontation with Iran. I certainly hope that the American President will listen.

I gather from your profile that you're an Iranian citizen?

The whole world is very concerned that if Iran gets a nuclear bomb that the Islamic fundamentalist will get nuke bombs. The world cannot allow that to happen.

Iran themselves will not use the bomb, they will give it to someone else to use. that way, they avoid any nuclear retailation.
Of course, if you're country DOES use a nuke. You better find a hole to crawl into 'cause some country (not neccessarily the usa) WILL retaliate and you will be dust.

Old saying: He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.

I hold no hatred against Iran. as a matter of fact, I was friends with two iranians back in my college days.

I wish there wouldn't be a war.
The only way for us not to fight wold be if Iran backs off the nuke program.
We have the nukes, so we have the power. It may not be fair, but we do have a say in who gets nukes and who doesn't. Call it a perk of being a super power.

Someone correctly foreshadowed about China. There will be a conflict between us and China and it will decide the next dominate super power.

Are you Mexico? - Not unless you bottle up your side of the border.

Iran? Stop threatening the world with nukes. We have them because we invented them. We can tell you stop because we have the strength to back it up.

China? Stop stealing our technology and keep away from Taiwan and maybe we'll be nice.

Canada? Doubt it. Have a nice day.

I hope not. I fear yes.

American people and Iranian people would probably like each other if we got to know each other. I think they already do like each other! I do not hate Iranians.

But our governments are on a collision course, and I support America.

Someone wiser than I am will have to find a solution.
