If you want to kill them cheap and VERY effectively, here's what to do:
Make a mixture of 3 parts 20 Mule Borax (found in the laundry section) to 1 part sugar. So if you use 1 cup Borax, mix it with 1/3 cup sugar.
Then, spread around cracks that you see the ants at -OR- put the mixture in something like jar lids and put in corners of your house. I read about this in Good Housekeeping and it really works! The bugs are attracted to the sugar, and the Borax dries up their exoskeleton and kills them.

If it rains out the likelyhood that ants will come into the house increases 10 fold. If your in a warm/mild weather climate they will invade whenever it rains.

They (ants) have found a food source. Find the source of food in your house and also find where they are coming in at. Set out traps and poison. The poison granules will be carried back to the nest to kill them too.

Getting out of the cold. We had them this time also. They went away as soon as it got slightly warm.
