You can call yourself whatever you want to call yourself. If you prefer to be called Scottish American, then tell people that. That has nothing to do with black people.
And no.. you don't HAVE to call black people African American. I'm black, and that is what I prefer to be called. The fact that we are American is pretty obvious. Its okay to call Chinese American's Chinese. Its okay to call Mexican American's Mexican. So on and so forth. The only problem is when it comes to black people because SOME want to be called African American. Let it go. The issue has been beaten to death. Call yourself what you want to call yourself.

Because America really don't know what to make of "black" people in this country. We are mutts in this country of mixed races. We are no longer just African as we were when we first came over here on the slave boats. We are not just White because of 'Master' and his creepy to the slave quarters in the dark. And then there's the mixture of the native americans, latinos, ect... Personally I don't like labels at all. Most people are of mixed ethnic groups anyway.

Well what do you say when you want to refer to a African American?

"Look at that guy" (not for any derogatory reason....)

"What guy"

"the one in the green shirt"

"there are 5 guys in green shirts".....

You see the point? The term really doesn't matter, it's just that many people use or perceive some terms as a slur.

If you knew any black people you would understand that most of them don't really care if they're called black or African American.

I feel like it's more proper to use the term 'African American' instead of 'Black'. Isn't it kind of tacky to use 'black'?? I think it is.

Oh, and I'm Italian-American.....but you can just call me Italian. LOL

You don't have to call me african american. I'm black. If I'm called African American it doesn't bother me. Whatever.

Well, it's quite simple. The next time you come in contact with a person from a different ethnic ask them what they prefer to be labeled as.

At the time that the term was developed it was the least offensive designation. It has now outlived it's usefulness.

I think that it is PC. I mean I have no qualms about be called black. I think that in term of race that white is Caucasian, and you would have to explain your lineage to other people.
