Indoors, a basement is best. Otherwise, go to an inside room (bathrooms work well, get in the tub and cover with a mattress). If you are outside, I have always been told to get into a ditch. That way you are as low as possible.

A basement.

If you don't have a basement, the next best thing is to stay in a hallway away from any windows. You should crouch down with your head between your legs and cover the back of your head/neck with your hands.

If no basement, then a room with no windows. If all rooms have windows, prop a mattress over the window. The bathroom - in the tub can also be a good place, lay in the tub with a mattress over you and your family. I'm not kidding!

You should stay away from windows. Go to the lowest part of your home. You can put a mattress over your head.
