I am 13 years old and i am very skinny. i have never had and never will have an eating disorder, but i feel very self-conscious about my appearence. I am often teased about being skinny, and even my friends call me "abnormally skinny" and refer to me as "toothpick" and "stick".

I eat and exercise normally but I don't gain weight. the way i look stings a lot when i am reminded of it. Clothes never really fit me right. My friends constantly complain about the way they look. they always tell me they are "too fat" or "ugly". when i tell them i am self-conscious about being very skinny, they dissmiss it. Apparently, it is more troubling to think you are fat.

I want everyone to realize people who are very skinny face the same self-doubt as those who think they are fat. Think about that next time you make assumptions or a joke about a girl who is skinnier and than most.

I don't want you to feel sorry for me, I just want you to know that nobody is perfect- "skinny" doesn't make you perfect.

I'm here to back you up on that one. Although you didn't ask a question, I will answer by saying, yes, you are right, and I know from personal experience. I have never had an eating disorder either, but have always been thin. It doesn't matter what I eat, I stay thin, and I am now in my 50s. I have been teased, just like you, and it is very hurtful. I would like to add that I would like to be able to gain more weight because I do not feel that being this thin is all that attractive, and I wish I had some meat on my bones. But I don't, and I will never get there, so I've learned to be comfortable with who I am over the years, and I hope you will do the same. You have a good, and valid point. All the best.

My 16 year old niece has the same problem. She's a size 0 and tall. Not her fault, she's just that skinny. If someone says something to her at the mall, she looks at them and will say "if I was overweight, would you have said the same thing?" Never meanly or with sarcasm but just states it and walks away. I know a lot of people will think twice before mentioning something ot the underweight as well.

Question, only 13... are you "developing" yet? If not, I bet anything you get some curves and fill out a bit when the boobs start to come in. But yes, skinny OR fot, anything other than "magazine normal" (those impossible babes with touched-up photos) can get made fun of. Sad. You hang in there, you're doing just fine!

We call my niece sticky. She likes it. But then again she is only 10. I can understand how it would bother a girl a little bit older-around your age.
I understand where you are coming from, making fun of someones looks can be harmful regardless if its a fat person or skinny person.
Dont worry, im certain one day you will start to fill out. Enjoy life, and remember when your friends say things they are only playing with you and probably dont mean any harm. If it bothers you that bad let them know.

Hi. I was very very skinny when I was your age. And people made fun of me. And my clothes always looked funny. I know it won't help much -but wait a few years.... the years have a tendency to "put on the pounds."

i'm not-so-skinny anymore!!!

god bless!

Yup sounds like you're learning what most *real* adults know -- but don't fear there will be many adults that you encounter throughout life that will not have grown up past the 12 year old strange and learned this.

Wow! I never thought of that. I'll definitely think twice before teasing my best friend about being skinny. It sucks to be overweight, but apparently just as much to be underweight. Thanks for sharing!
