Just was wondering. I have a lot of expensive jewelry that has been in my family for a long time. I might be facing a judgement from a private lawsuit. Can they claim and gain access to my safe deposit box?

If they have a judgment, they can go after any assets you have. With a court order, it wouldn't be all that hard for them to find out that you have a safe deposit box.

However, the chances of them taking jewelery is probably slim. They want the money and don't want to have to go selling a bunch of jewelery. My suggestion to you is that if you do get a judgment against you, set up a payment plan and make the payments. They aren't going to go searching for your assets unless you default on the payments.

If it is deposited in your name without any other document stating that it is family asset, the court could attach the same on getting information about from any source. So if no attachment is already effected it would be only wise to take it and keep it away as soon as possible.

I would contact the bank and find out. If they place a lien on your assets then they bank my disclose all of your account balances and the fact that you have a safe deposit box.

Only if they know about it.

Is it in any papers? And do YOU own it? If not, then dont worry about it.

If you DO own it and its in some inheritance documents, then give it to another family member, complete with paperwork. Give away everything you own - car, house, computer, phones - everything - so you have and own nothing. Close out your bank accounts and give the money as a gift to a relative.

Then tell them to come get a piece of ZERO.

I would have a trusted friend/sister/brother put it in a safety deposit box in her name. Emphasis on trusted. Never ever tell another living soul about it, either.
