I put a used fuel pump on a 1990 7.3 liter Ford. Didn't pump up the fuel to the filter head bleeder. So I put a new pump on there. Same problem. Both tanks are clear full. Usually I can crank about 10 seconds on a new tank (after running a tank dry) and it pumps right up. What is the deal? Do I need to pour fuel in the filter assembly? Pressurize the tanks? I have never had this problem and have worked on diesels a LOT. Next I am going to blow on the tank and see if fuel comes out at the lift pump. Thank you in advance!

Sounds like you need to pump it some more. You should get fuel out of the bleeder. Don't pour fuel into the filter that only works on Gas. I have done this but only do this at your risk. Take starting fluid and spray a VERY SMALL AMOUNT in the air intake into the block. Crank and it will fire and pull any air in the injectors out. You can repeat this but if you spray too much you can damage the engine. Head gaskets. a 1 second blast would be more than enough.

You have provided yourself with the answer and me with two points. Always prime the pump on a diesel because that is what provides the lubricant for the pump and seals. When you ran out of fuel in the tank the pump still had it's prime.

Always fill the filter container with diesel fuel before reinstalling. They're should be a bleeder screw somewhere to vent any air in the lines.

Blow into the tank and there should be a bleeder valve by the filter press that till bubbles are gone while turning engine over.

The older units you used to have to go through a priming procedure, but with the new electric pumps you do not, but you may have to run a minute or so prior to trying to start. I believe there is information in the owners manual.

there's a gas pump on the facet of the engine, its approximately 50mm sq. with a plastic disguise hung on with the aid of a knurled screw. The gas hoses flow into it and out to the carbs. The pump has 2 neoprene diaphragms that choose changing each so in lots of instances, you may get a provider kit to overtake the pump. i visit characteristic that if there became something incorrect with the gas line it would the two leak or no longer pass gas in any respect.

check the fuel line. since you ran the tank dry there can be sludge and other trash in the line causing the fuel pump not to pump.
