Stationary is only a concept in relation to another object. In our case, when we stand still we are stationary in relation to the object Earth.

If we were on Mars standing still, we would be stationary to object Mars, but moving very fast in relation to folks back home.

So, stationary has no concept in the cosmos, it is only relatibe to the body you are on, be it a planet, moon or space ship.

Other than that, we ride with Earth, the sun, the local stars, the galaxy at a resulting velocity that nobody knows - and what do you relate it to? There is not a stationary spot in space to relate it tto?

You have asked an unaswerable question.

This is a good question. I don't know the speed, but as being educated in meteorology, other people and I have remembered when we experienced unusual cycles in the weather patterns during different years. For example, this year (2007) the weather was the same in 1934 and 1888. The Earth's surface and air temperature changes as we are traveling through the universe, because of the effects of the constellations, angle of the sun, distance from the sun varies, etc. So it looks like an average of 60 years it takes to make a "loop." Probably some genius here could figure the speed and distance within the loop.

Have you never heard the "Galaxy Song" by Eric Idle?

"Just remember that we're standing on a planet that's evolving,
Revolving at nine hundred miles and hour.
It's orbiting at ninety miles a second, so it's reconned,
Around the Sun which is the source of all our power.
The Sun and you and me, and all the stars that you can see,
Are moving at a million miles a day,
In an outer spiral arm at forty thousand miles a minute,
In a galaxy we call the Milky Way...."

These numbers are approximate. Your rotational speed may be less due to distance from the equator. Daytime orbital speeds are less and nightime orbital speed are greater. Offer void where illegal. Check your local listings for schedule changes.

Its more complicated than you think, because there is the speed the earth moves around the sun, the speed the earth moves through the milky way, the rotation of the earth, and the speed that the milky way moves through the local cluster! Crazy!

Speed is relative, as many before me have said.

The Earth rotates on it's axis in about 24 hours (one day). In that time you are spun on the surface of the Earth in a circle. The distance of that circle depends on your latitude. If you are at the equator then you travel about 26000 miles in 24 hours, but if you are at the north or south pole, you don't move at all in 24 hours (relative to this model).

However, the Earth moves about the sun in a counterclockwise (on our model, because we chose North as North) direction at a speed of whatever million miles per year.

Of course, the sun rotates about the galactic center at some unthinkable speed relative to the galactic core.

Then, as you suspect by now, the galaxy moves about it's local cluster with astronomical measurements of speed in relation to each other.

We could go on, and on, and on...

There's no signpost to measure speed against. You can pick anything around you and come up with an answer from zero to just about the speed of light.

Hi. Relative to the cosmic background radiation we are traveling close to the speed of light.

The erath orbit the sun at a certain speed, the sun orbits the milki wat aat a certain speed, the milky way is moving within the local group at a certain speed, it's impossible to say, they are all going in different directions.
