I agree, the war has no meaning but as for your comments about the Brits see below:

One : The british people didn't send him, the army did.
Two : I assume he won't be placed in any directly dangerous situations. The army will make sure his location is kept secret.
Three : That's his job, he's in the army, and he wanted to do it, if not he'd have no credibility with his fellow troops.
Four : Personally, what the royal family does is of little interest to me, as I'd prefer to live in a republic.
Five : We're on the verge of pulling the troops out, and he won't be there long anyway.

Like in WW1 when the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and later still Duke of Windsor) complained to Lord Kitchener, Secretary of State for War, that he was being kept out of the front line fighting in France. He pointed out that he had brothers, and that if he were killed the succession to the throne would not be interrupted. Kitchener's response was that he was not at all concerned about his being killed, but what he could not permit in any way was the chance of his being taken prisoner.

The royal family are largely figureheads with no real significance in governing the country. They can all go to Iraq and it wouldn't change anything other than reduce the average thickness of British tabloids.

I thought I heard on the news the Brits were pulling out and going home. Personally, I respect him for his decision though.

The army let him join so he should be allowed to fight if he wants, good on him not wanting to leave his men behind
