As long as you have your Xbox in an area where it can breathe, and preferrably not on a carpeted floor you should be able to play for hours upon hours without a crash. However if you keep it in a small cubby or shelf with no room to breathe it can crash within an hour or so.

i have an xbox 360. now the games line up is phenominal, with many more great games coming soon. i purchased an intercooler thatattaches to the back. it keeps my xbox from overheating. if you purchase one, get one that attaches to the back where the plug is because then you need no extrat wires, it just plugs into the same AC port. and its fans will take out the heat that can damage the system. it really is great. i can go hours upon hours without a problem.

I am not really answering your question exactly, but my son's xbox 360 was about a month old when we had to send it in for repair or replace...i don't think it ever overheated, it just wouldn't read games...it will be back from microsoft today..we have a carpeted basement floor and had the machine upright with all breather vents in the open, so i think it was a defective unit.

The earlier models were more prone to overheating than the models made in the last year. You can always buy the add-on cooling fans from Wal-Mart or Amazon for about $20.
