I'm not gonna source this, but you can probably find it by looking up Robert Moses.
What I learned, was that as Long Island, New York was becoming more suburban in the mid 1900s, Robert Moses designed the roadways of the island. The major public facilities at the time were the parks such as Eisenhower Park, Wantagh Park, Jones Beach, etc, and the roadways were designed largely between the parks, and were called parkways.
For example, on LI, Wantagh State Parkway connects Wantagh State park to Jones Beach. Southern State Parkway connects Belmont State Park, Massapequa State Park, Hempstead Lake State Park, and Valley Stream State Park.

Parkways are public roads along parks. Driveways are short short roads leading up to one's home.

If going to church makes you a Christian, does going into the garage make you a car?

Roses are red,
Violets are blue.
Wait a second, isn't violet another name for the color purple?
Why do we call a blue flower, purple?
