I think that all skin shades are beautiful! The blackest of black and the whitest of white and everything inbetween. Mine happens to be very fair even though I am of mediterranean decent, and when ever I get some sun people notice me 10 times more. I used some self tanner the other day, and yesterday my friend told me oh you look good your not see through!

The perception is that a tan looks healthier. It equates with outdoor activity and an active life style. Some folks can't bare the Sun though and exposure is detrimental.
If tan looks good on you and your skin can handle a little exposure then maybe that's the best look in your case. I don't think it's an ethnic thing. Some folks just look better with a tan.

I am in the same place as you. I get really pasty and all my blemishes are clearer when I am pale. i think that is why. Also tanner skin is considered, by society, to be more attractive. Pale skin can be beautiful in it's own unique way. I personally look washed out when I am not tan. I've been meaning to get a tan myself, because I feel so pasty right now! i hope this helps

I have the same problem. Im very Irish so im pale. I think I look pretty good tan too , but the thing is, tanning damages your skin and we'll be the ones with beautiful skin later in life when people who tan will look like leather handbags :-p

Social weirdness is why. What is "attractive" changes all the time. For instance now smaller boobs is coming back and women are getting implants removed! Light skin used to be in (a tan meant you were a low-class person with an outside job) and even further back, pudgy women were in style. tans are harmful, I never try for one, always end up with plenty of all-over exposure as it is without "laying out" or anything! Just be you ;-)

I think tans are just more noticeable. Its like when my husband doesn't say anything about how great my hair looks everyday, but when I come back from the salon, he says it looks good even if it was just a trim. I guess it is something that requires an effort and makes us look different than usual and therefore attracts more attention.

Girl I feel you. I am really really light but I'm black. My friends tell me that I should be a stop light... cuz when they see me they don't know whether to stop or slow down. (Red-bone...and high yellow slang in the a.a. community)

Anyway it's probaly cuz you just look healthier. People equate the bronze look with beauty. But hey I'm sure you're cute either way and if you do like the attention that you get when you're tanner just put on a little bronzer when you go out. (highlight your cheek area)

It's hard to fight man's natural instinct to be more attracted to a mate that looks healthier. When you are tan and have more color to your skin as opposed to a sickly pale color, the human instinct tells you that "This tan person is healthier and more able to produce child. This paler person does not look as healthy."

Not only that, but all kinds of fashion lines and models are making it even more convincing that tan is the way to go. Like Hollister, which is designed for "sun-kissed girls". So the idea that bronze his beautiful started from a natural instinct and was encouraged and accepted as an idea of beauty.

It's not the same everywhere, though. In China and Japan, pale-skinned women are considered more beautiful.

I say tanning is all well and good as long as you make sure you have the right protection and don't overdo it.

I'm tan by birth, lol! There's nothing unpretty about white skin. I think people just like tans better because it is supposedly a healthier look. Go with what looks best on you and don't worry about other people's insecurities.

because if you say 'wow you look soo pale, you look great' you sound like some sort of scary white supremeist. i dont know why, its kind of ridiculous. i agree, all skin colours are just as good as each other, ppl should stick with what they have, both tanning and bleaching is bad for your skin. i'm very pale, so pale its hard 2 fink make up light enough, and if ever i mention my skin tone, ppl say 'no, your not, your fine' as if its a really bad thing! i would never say the same about someone with dark skin, id sound like a complete racist, and its just rude!

Tanned and darker skin allows for all the finer points of your skin to show. Did you know that bodybuilers cake temselves with all sorts of tanning stuff right before competitions? That's because it allows the muscle tone to be more visible.

When your legs are tanned, they look more toned and beautiful right?

nothing wrong with white girls, but a tanned white girl, I'll take a bite out of that @$$ anyday.
